چکیده

Chiral symmetry breaking in stirred crystallization of sodium chlorate (NaCI03) is believed to occur via nucleation of a single chiral "mother crystal" that produces a new generation of crystals which inherit its chirality. We here report results of stirred crystallizations resulting in massive "instantaneous" primary nucleation and total symmetry breaking. The results of these experiments suggest that the current explanation for chiral symmetry breaking via nucleation of a single "mother crystal" is not adequate and that the mechanism to explain the chiral symmetry breaking in crystallization remains as an open question.

Chiral symmetry breaking during crystallization: an advection-mediated nonlinear autocatalytic process.

When a chiral chemical compound crystallizes from solution or from its melt, stirring often results in the formation of crystals of just one of the two possible enantiomers, while without fluid advection both enantiomers are formed. We demonstrate with simulations of the dynamics of the system that secondary nucleation is a nonlinear autocatalytic phenomenon that can explain these observations....

Chiral symmetry breaking during crystallization: complete chiral purity induced by nonlinear autocatalysis and recycling.

We report experimental results that show a large and symmetric population of D and L crystals moving into complete chiral purity, with one of the enantiomers completely disappearing. The results indicate (i) a new symmetry breaking process incompatible with the hypothesis of an initial single chiral phase or "mother crystal," (ii) that total symmetry breaking and complete chiral purity can be a...

Ostwald ripening, chiral crystallization, and the common-ancestor effect.

We introduce an agent-based model for advection-mediated chiral autocatalysis in which we take into account dissolution-crystallization processes through Ostwald ripening. We demonstrate that the latter phenomenon is the key to explaining previously puzzling experimental results whereby complete chiral symmetry breaking is attained from an initially unbiased mixture of seed crystals. We show th...

Enantiomorphic symmetry breaking in crystallization of molten sodium chlorate.

Enantiomorphic symmetry breaking of stirred samples of molten sodium chlorate is demonstrated, revealing the unexpected involvement of an achiral solid phase. The results should stimulate future computational models of nucleation, including symmetry breaking, and have implications for mechanisms that invoke enantiomorphism in natural minerals to explain biohomochirality.

Chirality Selection in Crystallization

A cluster growth model is proposed to study chiral symmetry breaking in stirred crystallization from an achiral element. Achiral monomers are assumed to coagulate to form chiral clusters from dimers to hexamers. Due to the stirring, the hexamers break into dimers. The coagulation of two dimers into a tetramer also occurs. The fixed point analysis of coupled rate equations of cluster densities a...
